Doo Wop

Ever wonder what the ‘doo wop’ in Bruno Mars’ latest album ‘Doo Wops and Hooligans’ means? It is actually a genre of music which developed in the 1940s among the African-American communities in the United States. Later, Italian Americans too joined in. It achieved mainstream popularity in the ‘50s and ‘60’s when Doo Wop bands such as The Temptations, Mills Brothers, and The Swallows made this genre popular among the masses. It is more of a vocal based version of rhythm and blues music. It involves many vocal based harmonies, secants and variations brought about by vocalists. Many bands and artists such as Led Zeppelin and Billy Joel have done Doo Wop songs which have been commercial hits.
