Music Today

Music has appealed to man since the beginning of time. After a hard days work, ancient man would sing, dance and play musical instruments to relax. Today music has come a long way. From bulky gramophones, to tape recorders we are today in a age of digital music where you can carry as much music as you like in a devise not even as big as the size of your palm, thanks to ipods and other Mp3 players. Any music, catering to any taste, new or old, whatever be the place of origin is found easily online and can be transferred easily to your listening device. Where on one hand we are faced with problems like copyright infringements, fact remains, that music has become more global than it ever was.

The Blues

If you’re looking for real soul and emotion in music, you must listen to the Blues. It originated in the cotton plantations of America during the early 18th and 19th centuries. To make it easier to identify the genre, you must pay attention to the lyrics. Blues songs talk about suffering, pain and the inability to break free from chains of dissatisfaction. The main reason behind this is that this genre of music was used by African-American people to highlight their pain. Blues music has grown over the years, and has transformed tremendously from the days of Nat King Cole and Elmore James, to the present days of John Mayer and Eric Clapton. A person must acquire a taste for this kind of music in order to like it.

Reading music

Reading music is not very difficult once someone grabs the basic principles according to which music is written. Generally written on stave paper, western music is written differently for different instruments. While piano music has two separate lines of music - one bass and one treble - instruments like the guitar have the bass and treble together.
While reading music, one must pay attention to the time signature in which the piece is, whether there are any key signatures, and the beat in which the music is proceeding. Minims, crotchets, quavers, pauses as well as ties must be paid attention to.

U2 on Music News

Irish rock band have decided to come up with a box set of their collection to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their album Achtung Baby. The Irish rockers have recently been inducted to the hall of fame for being the highest earning band in the rock music industry.

The bands manager further declared that box set would be available in different formats for people to choose from. Critics claim that this is a stunt by the band’s management to try and increase the price of the set in order to reel in money under the pretext of different formats.

Music Piracy

With most of the latest music albums available either as torrent downloads or on You Tube, people hardly feel the need to go and purchase the latest album from the stores. With music video platforms like You Tube and others on high demand, many share and upload even the unreleased music videos and songs without realizing the harm they create to the recording industry. The worst part for these industries is that they cannot even file it under piracy as the consumer does not gain ownership on the content present on You Tube. However with software’s that allow for downloads of buffered videos, songs are made available to people at the click of their mouse.

The good old music

William Shakespeare said, “If music be the food of love, play on.”

Well, that saying by the bard is more than just true. Music transcends all boundaries and mends relationships no matter how estranged they are. There have been various legends in the past that have continuously invented and re-invented music which has inspired millions of people around the world. However, the younger generations tend to forget their value and contribution to the world of music. They tend to adore new artist who are not even close to being called ‘musicians’, which is rather sad. To explore the ‘new’ music, these generations need to explore the good old stuff to find out the origin to that genre of music and to understand the depth music had thanks to these legends. It is time these younger generations realize to real value of music through these legends.

A Different Beat

With the emergence of the modern generation, the rise in experimental music is something that has caught the attention of musicians. Emerges of new music genres are accredited towards development of new forms and styles of music or by new categorization. For example when bands started getting involved in “rock music” few bands diverted and introduced growling and heavy use of lead guitar. That in turn got categorized as “Metal” in the early 1960s and then where further categorization on basis of lyrics (dark metal) and sound (heavy metal) and style (punk metal) Fusion music is also something similar where two genres are combined like “rock and roll” or “psychedelic trance”.

Relation of music with mathematics

The theorists of Music often use mathematics to get an in depth understanding of music and its working process. Greeks were the first to research and make musical scales equivalent to numerical ratios. The other ancient civilizations like Chinese and Egyptians are known to have studied the mathematical dogma of sound. All of them believed that the nature consisted of sounds that came out of numbers. It is also believed that composition of music can be done in the form of musical applications present in the form of abstract algebra and number theory. Till date many composers make music on such guidelines.

Guitars

A guitar is perhaps the most popular instrument in the world. A guitar is a string instrument, and is of various kinds. Acoustic, Hawaiian, Spanish and electric guitars are a few examples. All of these guitars play differently and produce different sorts of music - thus they're obviously meant for different genres. Learning how to play a guitar is not very difficult, considering the number of self taught guitarists there are all around. A guitar can be played at the most basic level, where one only plays chords and uses the instrument as a accompaniment; or at an advanced level, where the guitar is the primary musical instrument.
